The Explanation For Those Who Dont Even Have A Computer
Entering your favourite web pages on a social bookmarking site is the same as putting into your favourites folder on your web browser, except that you can access your bookmarks(favourites) from any computer. For instance, say you are organising the ski chalet for a trip, you save the potential chalets web pages to your chosen social bookmarking site, nip round to your sisters to discuss dates and salopettes. She finds the Ryanair flight she saved to her favourites on her computer but then struggles to find the alternative flight options she looked at. You boldly go to your A1Bookmarks site, and there is the full list of your potential chalets sitting on her computer.
The next stage on from this situation is 3 years later, when you have bookmarked your chalets, villas, car hire, ski rental, resort information etc every year, and have moved to Timbukto; your sister emails asking if your can remember the company's name that rented out the chalet to you, and what was the name of the little pizzeria down the road? You can retrieve all this information in an instant from your social bookmarking site, on your Timbukto computer.
The Social Bookmarking sites have made saving the web pages very easy by providing members with a button on their browser which automatically save the web page you are currently reading, when clicked. Or you may see the various logo buttons at the bottom of web pages and at the end of articles and on any site nowadays...digg this or stumbleupon...
This is all well and good for us home users who book flights and concerts, or have to help research Ancient Egypt 3 times for that year 5 project. Or even for the engineer searching for the best overnight suppliers of air cylinders twice a year.
But for business owners of websites the effects are more far reaching; When you put your search for 'cheap flights to Barcelona' into google the most popular cheap flights site will be at the top of the list.(apart from those coloured couple of sites which someone has paid to be there)If you can make your website popular, you too can be top-so that if someone in Birmingham is looking for a new chimney, and types in Chimney Birmingham, your company (Chimneys r Us, Birmingham) web page will come above your competitors, and I will phone you for a quote fist.
Are you still with me?
Every time your website is saved to a social bookmarking site, google will give it another tick, and see it as more popular, and it will move up the rankings. Within the social bookmarking community, the sites can also be used as a search engine, and seen as a second tier of recommendation; someone else has found the site and rated it enough to bookmark it.
We all like a recommendation, and many bookmarking sits list the top 10 bookmarks in a particular category (Finance, Property, Music, Chimney in Birmingham...) So, for businesses with a worthy website, a couple of days spent signing up to the useful sites (more on useful later)and bookmarking your own site, could send your company to the heady heights or at least page 1.I have done a fair bit of social bookmarking now and have listed the best and useful sites on the basis of ease, speed and simplicity.
The term useful applies to the 'do follow' with 'public folders' Theres no point putting your company website in a private folder where no-one will see it and worse, no-one will count it. The 'do follow' aspect of websites enables the website listed to be a link; if you click it, it will take you to your page, and be counted towards your popularity.Web site addresses (URLs) in the comments field of blogs and sites which are 'no follow'are ignored by google, so pagerank and indexing are not improved for your site, from these links.
The expectation of making 'no follow' sites was that this would disuade spammers from commenting on blogs, and prevent hard core porn popping up on your screen when you have clicked on Dave from Chesters comment on the overnight delivery of air cylinders. For our purposes, we need a click on our name to link to our website; the web site becomes more visible, moves up the pages and is easier to find for the potential customer. All you then have to do is provide a good service to get your repeat business.Don't forget to tell your new client to bookmark your site. He may need to recommend you to his sister when the chimney of her chalet needs fixing, while he is staying with the Tuaregs in Mali.
