Alistair Darling budget in April managed to ignore all pleas for relief from beer tax increase from Publicans who are already crushed from the effects of the smoking ban, cheap supermarket alcohol and the credit crunch in general. Pubs are finding it difficult to keep their regulars returning, let alone attract new customers.
Help may be at hand from the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, who have made recommendations for the relaxation of the rules for live music in pubs. Many publicans believed that the rules have been enforced with a heavy hand by police and local authorities for reasons of maintenance of public order and prevention of terrorism. The 2003 restrictions are widely considered to be bureaucratic, costly for Publicans, and also a threat to the UK music industry.
Fergal Sharkey the Chief Executive of UK Music strongly backed the relaxation of measures; "The UK has a world-class music industry, but it is underpinned by extremely delicate foundations via an intricate network of back rooms in pubs, bars, clubs, hotels and halls," he said. "For continued future success, it is vital that tomorrow's superstars and young musicians have somewhere to ply their craft, somewhere to play and that communities have a place to gather together." An argument often used by the Pub Industry.
